Match Preview: Chelsea vs. Manchester United

The “Clash of the Titans” awaits us this Sunday as Manchester United come to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea. The match has often been a title decider over the past few seasons, and with both teams having had a decent start to the season so far, the match will most certainly have title ramifications.

In terms of form, Chelsea have the edge. Despite our midweek loss to Shakhtar in the Champions League, the Blues have momentum on their side. Chelsea are still unbeaten in the Premier League and have won beaten both Tottenham and Arsenal away from home. Out of 8 matches played in the League so far, Chelsea have won 7 and drawn 1. United, in comparison have won 6 and lost 2. Nevertheless, Roberto Di Matteo knows that the match against United won’t be an easy one and will not be underestimating the threat that Sir Alex Ferguson’s men pose.

Chelsea look a lot stronger since the last time we played United, but the same can be said about the Red Devils. The signing of Japanese play-maker Shinji Kagawa and former Arsenal skipper Robin Van Persie have only added to the enviable firepower that United possess. One can expect an open-ended match given the tremendous amount of firepower both sides have at their disposal. Both sides will be slightly vulnerable at the back. Chelsea will miss skipper John Terry, who is serving a 4-match ban after the FA charged him with racially abusing Anton Ferdinand. United will be without the services of Nemanja Vidic, who is out injured. United’s defence, led by Rio Ferdinand will be a considerably weakened one given Rio’s recent penchant for focusing on matters outside of football. All jokes aside, the match will definitely be one of the most exciting matches on display this weekend.

Key stats:

1) Chelsea are unbeaten against Manchester United in the last 10 Premier League meetings at the Bridge- Chelsea have won 6 and drawn 4 of these matches.

2) Chelsea (19) and United (21) are the League’s top scores so far, although United have conceded 11 goals in comparison to Chelsea’s 6.
