The next wonderkid at Chelsea?
Ronan Queiroz de Paula Afonso born on the 29th of August 1994 is an attacking left-back footballer who plays for the youth team of Fluminense based in Brazil, but there is a great chance of him becoming a Chelsea FC player in the future. Chelsea own certain percentage of three Fluminense players economic rights as part of a deal that saw Deco move from Chelsea to Fluminense in 2010 . The three players are Wallace Oliveira dos Santos (Attacking right back), Ronan Queiroz de Paula Afonso (Attacking left back) and Rafael Rodolfo de Souza (Central Forward)
Chelsea sent their Scouts to watch some of their youngsters in a Brazilian competition and selected those 3 players; some months ago Ronan Afonso was quoted in the Brazilian media saying “For Deco coming to Fluminense, they needed three players who were based in the juniors,”. “They sent a scout to watch the championships and to choose three players – myself and two others (Wallace and Pernao). “With Deco arriving at the club, they sold 50% of my rights to the English club”
Fluminense have one of the best youth academies in the world. In recent years they have produced the likes of Deco, Maicon, Thiago Silva, Marcelo and Belletti.
I am not going to focus on all three players; this article is basically about Ronan Afonso who is one of the two players Chelsea have part of their economic right with first refusal to buy. Wallace who graduated from the youth team to the senior team has already signed a contract with Chelsea and is expected to join the team in the summer.
Chelsea FC presently have four Brazilians in their team, namely Lucas Piazon, Oscar, Ramires and David Luiz with Wallace expected to join in the summer making him the fifth as long as they don’t sign any Brazilian in this winter transfer window.
This is a very good deal from Chelsea´s point of view, with the financial fair play rules coming into place in the nearest future what it means is that Chelsea can secure the signing of the remaining two players for far less than their actual market value.
This will depend on the progress of both players, out of the three players Wallace proved to be the best at the moment, showing great potential and was sought after by top European clubs notably Napoli.
Ronan Queiroz de Paula Afonso is a good young attacking left-back who likes to go forward and support the attack, there is nothing special about him but there is great room for improvement. In other words, the potential is there.
I had a twitter chat with Paulo Freitas (@Cynegeticus) who is a correspondent for Sky Sports and specialist in Latin American football, and in his words he said “Ronan doesn’t play for the senior team. He is alright, nothing special, not as good as say Wallace”. But as in the case of many great footballers time has always been a factor in transforming them from nothing special to something very special. This is my opinion about Ronan, I see him becoming a better player in the future.
I have attached an edited video of Ronan in various games he has future in, you be the judge of what you think about him. Also remember he still 18 years old, clique on the link below
