Chelsea extended their league at the top of the Barclays Premier League to four points overcoming local rivals Fulham but with Arsenal dropping all three points at Stoke, Man City having Cup commitments and Liverpool winning leaves it tight at the top and making it a four horse race for the BPL title with just ten games to play.
It’s turning out to be one of the most closely contested title race for years and with all four teams with a chance of landing the title come May. City have had one game postponed, this week they were playing the League Cup Final and by the time they play in the league again they might be playing catching up with a fixture pile up as Chelsea may well be 9 points clear at the top. The league standing after Gameweek 28:
Arsenal have got arguably the toughest title run ins with respect to the teams they are yet to face. Arsenal’s next four league fixtures are what could be termed as key fixtures as they face the sides in the top 6. Adding to the trip to Allianz Arena and an FA Cup tie.
Arsenal have to play Spurs away, Chelsea away, City home and Everton away as their next four BPL fixtures. If they can somehow pass this test they will have a tremendous chance to win the first piece of silverware since the FA Cup over Manchester United in 2005. These four fixtures will either throw Arsenal right in the mix or leave them out of the title race, surely there won’t be any middle ground.
Chelsea have had a great second half of the season, even though the strikers haven’t been clinical but the midfield has been providing enough ammunition which has propelled Chelsea to the top of the league and it’s a fact that whenever Jose’s team has been top of the league in February, he has always won the league title. A fact which every Chelsea fan would want to hold true once more.
Chelsea’s important fixtures are at home as the Blues host Tottenham and Arsenal but have a visit to Anfield scheduled for the 27th of April, the third last gameweek of this season. Mourinho and Chelsea will be hoping that Chelsea extend the lead at the top and maintain it so that the result at Anfield doesn’t have much bearing on the destination of the league title.
Liverpool to decide the destination of the league title:
One club i feel has the biggest say in the destination of the league title is Liverpool. Home games against Chelsea and Manchester City will go a long way in determining who finishes top. If Liverpool can maintain their great home record this season and get wins against Chelsea and City, something they are very well capable of it leaves Liverpool with a great chance.
Sitting pretty in 2nd place with a 4 points deficit to Chelsea, Liverpool have already over achieved this season but can they go all the and win it, that remains to be seen. They do have the strike force in Sturridge and Suarez but it’s the defense that’s going to be a massive worry for Liverpool. Either ways, they are going to be an active force right till the very end even if they might not be winning it they might be spoiling the party for someone else.
It’s really fascinating and it is become really hard to predict as to who will be at the top coming May but one thing is for sure is that it’s going right down to the wire, as a Chelsea fan i’ll hope we are top at the end. But let’s see ….
