Despite backing the coach recently, Blues board are said to be looking for an ideal replacement for the current manager, Jose Mourinho if he eventually get sacked.
According to The Mirror, a contingency plan is in the pipe if Mourinho fails to turnaround Chelsea poor performances this season with Diego Simeone singled out as a likely replacement for the boss.
The former Argentina international recently signed a contract extension with Athletico Madrid during the summer till 2020 with a buy-out clause of £15 million. Chelsea would need to pay the sum of £37.5 million if Mourinho is sacked, such pay out fee could quite make his replacement costly to the club in addition to the fee to be paid for Simeone.
The Athletico Madrid Boss is known for his aggressive and ruthless way his team is set up which made his team to break the Real Madrid – Barcelona dominance in Spain. He has helped the club to the Spanish La Liga, Copa Del Rey as well as the Europa Cup medal in his almost 4 years stint with the Spanish club after succeeding Gregorio Manzano in December,2011.
As the transfer window draws closer, it would be seen whether Chelsea would move for a replacement or rather wait and see if Mourinho would turns things around for the London side. Chelsea is currently 16th on the log with 8 points making it the worst start to a league season in 37 years.
Chelsea will play Aston Villa after the international break as they seek to kick starts their season.
